When I was a child, on weekends, I used to get shaken out of bed every Saturday by my parents who always acted like Saturday mornings in the summer were Christmas day. "It's time to go sailing!" they would say, and coral us into the backseat of the car. Then we would proceed to drive up and down neighborhood streets looking for pitiful paper signs taped to and propped up against telephone poles and street signs. From these signs we would squint and shout out directions to the nearest Garage Sale.
Garage Sale, Yard Sale, and Lawn Sale are all common names for a common weekend activity. People take things that they don't really want anymore and put them outside of their home. I have seen some REALLY STRANGE stuff in all my years of sailing, but I have also found some treasures.
Even though I still live very far away from my parents, I still can't help following the sad looking little signs to see what treasures I might come across. This weekend I found a few books, a shirt, a sari, some knitting needles and a handmade pottery bowl. To buy these things new they would have cost me a fortune, but at a Garage Sale they only cost about $20 in total.
Next time you see a sign for a garage sale, don't be afraid to follow the sign and check it out. Who knows what you might find.
