Here is a bit of encouragement...
In an economy where ‘Going Green’ is the trend, consumers are being encouraged to carry tote bags for groceries, buy reusable products, and look for the buzz word ‘organic’ on product labels. I totally buy into this trend. My front all closet is brimming over with reusable grocery bags, I go to a farmer’s market to buy locally produced food on Saturdays (www.eatlocal.org), I make every effort to cut down on consumption, and I recycle like a fiend. However, every time I refuse a plastic bag I always ask myself, “Are my efforts are really helping or if I am just pacifying my conscience with inconsequential acts.” This week I had some light shed on my question from an unusual source- Facebook.
About three years ago I set the homepage on my computer to www.thehungersite.com. I click on a button and it donates 1.1 cups of food to hungry children. In exchange all you have to do is look at a few advertisements that appear on your screen. The website will only allow you to do it once a day, but everyday (more or less) I have been faithfully clicking. About three months ago I found that I could add a hungersite application to my Facebook page. I did, and I was surprised to find that it counted the clicks and added up the food that I had donated for free. This week I hit 110 cups of food with my daily clicks. I’m not very good at math so I had never stopped to think about how things like this actually add up, but they do! This got me thinking about my efforts at recycling, and reusing and I realized that some of my other eco friendly habits have been adding up too. I know I am not alone either. These days being kind to the environment is hip and more people are jumping on the green train which means our combined impact actually does make a difference. Go Green!
